![]() Green represents 12-micron light, primarily emitted by dust. Stars are seen primarily in blue and cyan (blue-green), because they are emitting light brightly at 3.4 and 4.6 microns. ![]() The colors used in this image represent specific wavelengths of infrared light. The gaudily clad giraffe has what looks like a ruby choker above an emerald necklace just to the southeast, as well as an ankle bracelet. The red arc of Alpha Cam adds to collection of colorful objects in WISE images taken of the constellation Camelopardalis, or the Giraffe. Alpha Cam's bow shock cannot be seen in visible light, but WISE's infrared detectors show us the graceful arc of heated gas and dust around the star. ![]() The stellar wind compresses the interstellar gas and dust, causing it to heat up and glow in infrared. When this fast-moving wind slams into the slower-moving interstellar material, a bow shock is created, similar to the wake in front of the bow of a ship in water. The speed of the wind is boosted in the forward direction the star is moving in space. Because Alpha Cam is a supergiant star, it gives off a very strong wind. To put its speed into perspective, if Alpha Cam were a car driving across the United States at 4,200 kilometers per second, it would take less than one second to travel from San Francisco to New York City!Īstronomers believe runaway stars are set into motion either through the supernova explosion of a companion star or through gravitational interactions with other stars in a cluster. ![]() But Alpha Cam revs things up into a different gear. Previous examples can be seen around Zeta Ophiuchi, AE Aurigae, and Menkhib. It turns out that WISE is particularly adept at imaging bow shocks from runaway stars. It is probably somewhere between 1,600 and 6,900 light-years away and moving at an astonishing rate of somewhere between 680 and 4,200 kilometers per second (between 1.5 and 9.4 million miles per hour). The distance and speed of Alpha Cam is somewhat uncertain. Such fast-moving stars are called runaway stars. The supergiant star Alpha Cam is the bright star in the middle of this image, surrounded on one side by an arc-shaped cloud of dust and gas, colored red in this infrared view. NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, or WISE, captured this image of the star Alpha Camelopardalis, or Alpha Cam in astronomer-speak, speeding through the sky like a motorcyclist zipping through rush-hour traffic. Even if it looks a bit too old nowadays, the game can still hold its own, and the difficulty level should keep you on edge level after level.Just as some drivers obey the speed limit while others treat every road as if it were the Autobahn, some stars move through space faster than others. Enjoy a bit of the good old timesĪll things considered, DemonStar - Classic is exactly what you expect it to be, especially if you are familiar with the genre. The visual quality is nothing out of the ordinary, but it should be enough to keep your imagination active all the way through. However, your weapons are reset if you die, which means that you revert back to the most basic attack. Speaking of which, your ship can be upgraded as well by collecting power-ups dropped by destroyed enemy ships. Boss fights are very challenging as well, although they get a lot easier to handle once you figure out their attack patterns. The ships get more powerful as you manage to reach the later stages, and you have to pay attention to their deadly attacks. Gameplay-wise, all you need to do is survive the constant onslaught of enemies and shoot back to destroy them as quickly as possible. Hunt power-ups and upgrade your weapons to deal more damage In fact, the game is just a series of levels put together with no real connection between them, with the end goal being to clear them all. You do not need to know too much about the plot to have fun, on the other hand, so you can pretty much just ignore the story altogether. The story is nothing out of the ordinary either, since it’s the same old rant about the future and wars between species. In short, the formula is more or less the same, which means that you have to pilot a spaceship and use your onboard arsenal to destroy everything in your path. There are not many original concepts at play, but the game can still be tons of fun in the right hands. Fight your way to the final boss, the DemonstarĭemonStar - Classic is a retro shoot ‘em up that tries to revive the genre and keep the gameplay as classic as possible. You don’t need much to have fun in space, though, which is why it’s always a blast to shoot lasers at alien spaceships. On the other hand, the underlying formula did not change all that much in the meantime, given the fact that you do more or less the same thing nowadays as well. ![]() The shoot ‘em up genre can trace its roots back to classics like Asteroids and Space Invaders, although they have come a long way since then. ![]()
